Australia's best wines honoured in Halliday awards

The nation's proud history of producing world-class sweet and fortified wines is set to continue with examples from Rutherglen and Barossa Valley scoring a whopping 100 points in this year's awards.

Langhorne Creek's 171-year-old Bleasdale Vineyards in South Australia took home the Winery of the Year award for their shiraz cabernet blend.

McLaren Vale's Yangarra Estate won the award for best wine of the year with their Old Vine Grenache from 2021.

Mr Halliday's tasting team sampled 8500 wines over 3500 wineries in an annual tradition that's spanned 30 years.

Competition judges said they were "in awe" the value for money in this year's selection.

Halliday Wine Companion book chief editor Campbell Mattinson said the awards showcase the diversity of great wines found in Australia's regional areas.

"We've unearthed some gems and honoured the very best of the best Australia has to offer," he said.

Each year Mr Halliday marks Australia's wines out of 100 points with plonk scoring between 97 and 99 points considered "wines of major trophy standard in important wine shows".

And it's an elite cohort, wines that garner fewer than 84 points fall off the scoreboard altogether.

Yangarra Estate Vineyard Old Vine Grenache 2021 from McLaren Vale, South Australia was awarded the best red wine of the year with 99 points.

Sutton Grange Winery Fairbank Rose 2022 from Central Victoria won the best rose of the year with 97 points.

Landaire at Padthaway Estate Chardonnay 2021 from Padthaway, South Australia was awarded best white wine of the year with 98 points.

Sittella Wines Grand Prestige Late Disgorged 2010 Pemberton, Western Australia won best sparkling wine of the year with 97 points.

Limefinger Solace Riesling 2022 from Clare Valley, South Australia won 98 points.

Landaire at Padthaway Estate Chardonnay 2021 from Padthaway, South Australia won 98 points.

Pepper Tree Wines Museum Release, Limited Release Tallawanta Single Vineyard Semillon 2013 from Hunter Valley, NSW won 99 points.

Domaine Naturaliste Sauvage Sauvignon Blanc 2021 from Margaret River, Western Australia won 96 points.

Mayer Bloody Hill Villages Healesville Pinot Gris 2022 from Yarra Valley, Victoria won 96 points.

John Kosovich Wines Bottle Aged Reserve Chenin Blanc 2018 from Swan Valley, Western Australia won 98 points.

Giant Steps Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022 from Yarra Valley, Victoria won 98 points.

Yangarra Estate Vineyard Old Vine Grenache 2021 from McLaren Vale, South Australia won 99 points.

Murdoch Hill The Landau Single Vineyard Oakbank Syrah 2021 from Adelaide Hills, South Australia won 99 points.

Bleasdale Vineyards Wellington Road Shiraz Cabernet 2021 from Langhorne Creek, South Australia won 98 points.

Houghton C.W. Ferguson Cabernet Malbec 2020 from Frankland River, Western Australia won 98 points.

Bleasdale Vineyards The Iron Duke Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 from Langhorne Creek, South Australia won 98 points.

Yarra Yering Dry Red Wine No. 3 2021 from Yarra Valley, Victoria won 97 points.

De Bortoli (Riverina) Noble One Botrytis Semillon 2020 from the Riverina, NSW won 96 points.

All Saints Estate Museum Muscat Non-vintaged from Rutherglen, Victoria won 100 points.

Seppeltsfield 100-Year-Old Para Vintage Tawny 1923 from Barossa Valley, South Australia won 100 points.

Joshua Cooper Wines has taken home the award for best new Australian winery for their work making savoury chardonnay, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon.

Mr Cooper's wines are made with a focus on Australia's unique flavours rather than emulating European styles of winemaking.

"There's so much diversity out there," he told ACM.
